LegalZoom and Washington State Legal Update

It appears the Washington State Attorney General has dealt a blow to the company who claims it offers “Do-It-Yourself” legal documents online. The State of Washington recently entered into an Assurance of Discontinuance or an agreement relating to the business practices of LegalZoom.  This agreement prohibits the company from engaging in the unauthorized practice of law in terms of their wills and probate legal services.  It also prohibits LegalZoom from selling, disclosing or transferring to a third party any personal consumer information of a resident individual such as financial information or information related to personal property.  This agreement goes into effect October 1, 2010 and any violations of the agreement will result in a cost of $2,000 per occurrence by LegalZoom.   As I have repeatedly stated, should you need advice about estate planning you would be well served by consulting with an estate planning attorney.
