This issue was brought into the spotlight during the unforgettable Schiavo case in which Michael Schiavo went up against his in-laws, politicians, advocacy groups, the courts, and even the government, to have his wife, Terri Schiavo — diagnosed as being in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) for several years — disconnected from her life-sustaining feeding tube.
